Co-Managing Partner, GD1

ABOUT

Vignesh Kumar, who grew up in Port Moresby, is Co-Managing Partner of GD1 (Global from Day One), one of New Zealand’s leading venture capital firms, where he invests in emerging platforms across deep tech, health tech and hardware-enabled software.

He co-led the raise of GD1’s oversubscribed institutional fund of c.NZ$150 million — a rare milestone in New Zealand’s young venture ecosystem — and is an investor and board member of frontier technology companies including Dawn Aerospace (green propulsion and suborbital spaceplanes), Type One Energy (stellarator fusion), Foundry Lab (next generation metal casting), Zenno Astronautics (super magnets in space), Basis (hardware energy management platform for the home), Alimetry (AI medical diagnostic for gastic care), and Ivo (AI legal contract intelligence platform), among several other innovative companies.

Vignesh brings deep global operating experience to his investing. Prior to GD1, he was based in Cupertino, leading hardware execution across the US and Asia for Apple. Before Apple, he was a product design engineer at Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, helping design and bring to market products now regarded as the gold standard in neonatal resuscitation in delivery suites and NICUs worldwide. Following his own successful nine-month battle with blood cancer, he co-founded Journey Health, a digital health platform improving oncology care through patient-reported outcomes.

Vignesh holds an MBA from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was a Fulbright Science and Innovation Scholar and a Wharton and Kaiser Fellowship recipient, alongside Honours degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Device Design from the University of Auckland.

Vignesh’s connection to Papua New Guinea runs deep. He grew up in Port Moresby, where his father founded Badili Hardware, before the family moved to Auckland. A fluent Tok Pisin speaker, he maintains lifelong personal and family ties to PNG and the wider Pacific.
